Depends on whether you are so stressed that your eating habits have changed. Nails grow using calcium, just as your bones do.
Lack of calcium will make brittle nails. Drink more milk or take calcium supplements and buy a clear polish with calcium in it.Does stress make your finger nails go brittle?
Hi!
Yes, speaking from experience, stress can cause a whole load of problems, brittle nails being one of them.
Try taking a multivitamin containing Zinc as this is proven to help in the re-growth of nails, skin and hair. There is also a supplement you could take called skin, hair and nails which is available in places like Holland and Barrett (probably also your local chemists but may go under a different name) which will help to keep your nails healthy. You could also try a product could Silicea which will help repair the damage to your nails. Always check with your pharmacist before taking any of the above and ask whether it is best to take only one supplement/vitamin at a time rather than a combination.
Hope this helps.Does stress make your finger nails go brittle?
it shouldnt do? bad diet could though and age? use oil for your nails and apply a strengther or ridge filler that should do the trick!
good luck

Why do we have finger nails?
Why do we have finger and toe nails?
Why do they do?
Do we really need them? Why do we have finger nails?
i'm pretty sure its to protect the nerves at the tips of our fingers like have u ever cut your nails to short? it hurts cause the tips of your fingers are filled with nerve ending that allow you to feel things and they r really sensitive. and obviously cause they r fun to put nail polish on. jk. if that isn't what your looking for try typing in on googleWhy do we have finger nails?
As a guy who doesn't cut his fingernails, I don't understand why we cut them. They're incredibly useful - from opening packages to scratching myself to killing live animals in the woods, and slicing people's hands when they try to give me a handshake.. I love my fingernails and can't imagine life without them. As for toenails, who knows, they seem to just get ingrown and painful.
They may be a result of the fact that we descended from creatures who had claws which were used for climbing trees and digging in the soil fro find bugs to eats. So you can see that our claws have been greatly reduced through hundreds of thousands of years of evolution.
Nails have evolved from claws or talons showing our evolutionary descent

That happened to me...
DONT put a sticky band-aid on it! It KILLS when u take it off. Ice it for a few hours (maybe like 2 hours max) then get a finger splint and wrap a tissue around ur finger...
hope it helps :]
Also, put some anti-bacteria stuff on it because it can get infected sometimes, even if it's not an open cut or anything..

My daughter has face growing finger nails but lacks calcium wut is making her finger nails grow so long?
she does not eat healthy(not all the time) exercises outside (plays hard) eats fruit here and now and plays alot of sports
the doctors said she lacked calcium(two diffrent doctors)My daughter has face growing finger nails but lacks calcium wut is making her finger nails grow so long?
Calcium isn't the deciding factor in nail growth. It sounds like she gets lots of blood supply and stimulation to the hands and nails. Some people are just genetically able to grow their nails faster or stronger. My daughter has face growing finger nails but lacks calcium wut is making her finger nails grow so long?
face growing finger nails. What's that.

Nail Gun Injury to finger, Finger swollen, what should be done?
A small finishing nail went through his finger from a Nail Gun. His pointer finger, around the area where it bends. He was able to pull it out and seemed fine, but now its swollen. What should be done?Nail Gun Injury to finger, Finger swollen, what should be done?
You should have cleaned it thoroughly when the injury first happened, dumped a bit of hydrogen peroxide on it, and treated it with an antibiotic ointment.
If he hasn't had a tetanus shot in a few years, one might not be such a bad idea.
Regardless of how it was treated, if it is getting infected you need to go to a doctor and get some antibiotics to clear it up before it grows into a larger problem.Nail Gun Injury to finger, Finger swollen, what should be done?
well its the matter of ur health...if u really worry about ur finger then go to a doctor.
If he didn't disinfect the wound following injury he needs to go see a doctor to see if it's become infected.
It sounds infected. He should go to a doctor. He most likely will need antibiotics. If this was a regular cut it might be okay to just use neosporin and keep clean, but with a nail there is a risk of tetanus (which can be quite serious), so if he is not up to date on his tetanus booster he should also get a shot.
head to your nearest er. you should have to begin with and keep dangerous tools and things out of reach of children
Does it feel hot to the touch? If so, you need to go to the doctor. Is his tetanus shot up to date? If it isn't hot to the touch or if he can't feel his heartbeat in his finger, just keep it clean. Try a 50% hydrogen peroxide-water soak everyday. Swelling would be normal, but if it doesn't start to go down, you really need to get it checked out by a doctor.
Im sorry I dont mean this to be rude, but if your that worries to actually have to ask on here then you should be worried enough to go to your Dr's. You might get an infection or tetnas (SP) I would get it checked out especially if you haven't had a tetnus shot in a while
its infected he really needs to go to the doctor and get it checked out. It could have caused some more internal injuries that he thinks. The doctor can clean it out properly, and give him meds to clear up the infection.

Why are my finger nails are full of clouds?
i have a white splodges on nearly all of my finger nails and on my front tooth! but i drink lots of milkWhy are my finger nails are full of clouds?
Possibly an infection, more likely a zinc or calcium deficiency. You could drink even more milk (ew) and eat a burger.
It also might be due to some kind of medication you are taking. Either way, not a life-threatening thing. You can ask your doctor the next time you go in.
I get the same things. I just paint my nails. :PWhy are my finger nails are full of clouds?
Did you have a lot of antibiotics when you were young? Say for ear or throat infections? They can cause what you describe.

My husband jamed his finger in the truck door his nail is purple ?
and his finger has swolled i gave him advil for the throbing pain .what can i do for his finger to keep down the pain and swelling?thanks he dont want to go to the dr his finger is not broken. My husband jamed his finger in the truck door his nail is purple ?
Ice, elevate and advil is what we recommend with injuries such as this. Ice will help keep the swelling down, but do not put the ice directly on to the finger or else you will damage the tissue its in contact with. Put the ice on for 15-20 minutes 4 to 5 times a day. Keeping it elevated, around the level of your shoulder, will also help minimize the swelling and also the throbbing pain. Keeping it below the level of the heart will only increase the pain and swelling. Advil is a good over the counter medication that will help with the inflammatory process.
His finger nail sounds like it may eventually fall off. There are times in which a lot of blood has accumulated under the finger nail bed and a small hole is created in the nail bed to alleviate the pressure and allows for the extra blood to drain out. It sounds painful, but it isn't and the pain relief is instant. I hope this helps, feel free to email me if you have any other questions or concerns. My husband jamed his finger in the truck door his nail is purple ?
Thats what i would have done!!! Nice answer!
Give his some ice to put on it or soak it in a bowl of ice water for 15-20 minutes 2-3 times a day. How many advil did he take? He could take the amount equal to a prescription dose if it is really throbbing.
ICE,ICE,ICE.........THE NAIL WILL FALL OFF BUT IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME...............
I'm a nurse. He needs an x-ray to see if the finger is broken or a chipped bone. He needs something more for the pain also. Purple isn't a good color for an injured finger.
nothing i know it sucks if his nail is black or blue it willeither fall off or grow normally but stay that color advils it though.
ice pack for the swelling and pain killers for the pain.
Go to the doctor and they will inject Novocaine to deaden it and then rip out his nail and blood will splatter because it will un-swell it.
Or... put ice on it and wait a few days and then in a couple of weeks, his nail will turn black and fall off on it's own.
Either scenario you choose, his nail will eventually grow back.
well if his nail is purple more than likely it is a blood clot...if he just slammed his finger in the door of course it is going to be swollen for a little while but it wont last long...i slammed my finger in a slidding door and my finger nail was purple when it healed the nail ended up falling off which is painless and a new nail grew back
Just a cold pack. Hopefully he does not loose the nail after it heals.
ouch!!
that happened to my husband too!!
about 6 yrs. ago
he put ice on his, but ended up really goin to the doc
i had a bookshelf fall on my toe and you should take him to the hospital. laura j is right.
what will happen is when you go to the hospital they will lance the nail and let the blood out. it literally takes seconds and he will feel better right away. the small hole they put in the nail allows the blood to escape, relieving the pressure and preserves the tissue underneath.
if you don't do this, the tissue will die and the nail will fall off. this will only make things worse and he will spend the next few days in pain. it takes one quick little hole to clear everything up.
How do you know its not broken, or chipped bone need to get an x-ray to really know for sure
advil every 6 hours, ice pack or cold pack and elevate the hand....lay a pillow on his chest and have him prop his hand on it.
but a cold combress on it to keep the swelling down his nail might also fall off
just keep giving him advil or tylenol for the pain and keep his finger wrapped or covered with ice to keep from swelling and to help the swelling go down his fingernail might fall off depends on how bad it is, and his nail is probably just bruised.
A broken bone will react differently in everyone, when I broke my feet, both at one time, the nails on them turned purple and fell off, but I could still move them. For swelling I suggest a cold compress, ice in a ziplock baggie and wrapped in a clean cotton towel.
NEVER put an ice bag directly on the skin, it can cause freezer burn and make it stick to your skin. He may lose his fingernail(s), and eventually, with age, get arthritis in the damaged finger(s) if not treated promptly.
But this is his choice. Remind him, later as he complains of the aches and pains in that region, what he chose to do.
Give him a lot of ice to put on it, and make sure that he's taking the Advil every 4-6 hours.
His fingernail will fall off, and his finger is going to hurt for a week, but there's really nothing that a doc can do, anyways, but what I'm telling you to do now.
An ice pack to reduce the swelling, plus it will numb it.
ICE IT!!!! check with the DR if it doesnt improve, the nail will fall off and regrow.
put ice on it and hope the nail dosn't fall off.origins make up application

My finger nails and toe nails are flaking. My hair is breaking off and my feet are terribly dry.?
I recently moved to Shanghai, China, and am from the U.S. I am taking a multi-vitamin every day and use lots of lotion and only use Redken products on my hair. What could be wrong with me?My finger nails and toe nails are flaking. My hair is breaking off and my feet are terribly dry.?
People can often get problems when moving to another country. I think one of the main differences you are probably experiencing is the water. The water can be the main reason why your nails are cracking, and everything is dry. You should get a water softener put in if possible. Always put hand and nail creme on after washing hands.
It is a good idea to take calcium pills. Use conditioner as well for your hair.Make sure you maintain a healthy diet, and not just stuff yourself with pills though. My finger nails and toe nails are flaking. My hair is breaking off and my feet are terribly dry.?
Since you are in China a lot of great herbal products are available to you. For the time being just grate oatmeal, mix it with milk and honey and apply to affected areas, its awesome for your skin. By the way I am moving to Denver, CO. I am in desperate need of any advice, info, any thing.
try taking prenatal vitamins if you can get some. will help with calcium levels and other vitamins your body needs for nails and hair. I know several girls that always commented on how fast their nails and hair grew while taking those.
u need calcium for nails-drink more milk;and vitamin c-more oranges or tablets but thei will also increase your apetit;have some blood analyses at the hospital and the doctors will tell u what your body lacks
If you are not eating properly then this is a likely reason.
Low weight also does this.
Are you achey etc? if so see a doc,
Let me know how you get on!

Don't wash dishes without gloves. Get acrylics...they are cool...last for about 10 days...good for special occasions.
You could buy fake ones. Which they came out with these really cool french tipped ones. They are cool because they don't even feel fake. They are kind of shorter nails but they look really good. Or you could just take the time and let your nails grow out.
IF YOU HAVE TIME: Let them grow naturally. But you will have to shape them every alternate day with a nail file .
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TIME: Go to a parlour and ask for clip on finger nails. They are false ones!!
put un flavored gelatin in juice and drink it, soak hands in dish soap and water, push back cuticles with orange stick. shape with a file and wait. use the pads of ur fingers to do things like type ect. not tips of nails, try sally Hanson maximum growth polish.
if u bite them STOP!! u can get seriously ill but if u dont to stop them from breakin use a nail hardener it really works

Take Vitamin E its suspose to help with your skin/hair/nails.. and Calicum will also help strenghten your nails and bones. The white line sounds like a deposite of calicum mabey? ( i heard some doctor talk about them once b4.. theres not concerning at all )

Why can you only use the ipod with your finger? Like you can't use a stick or your nail...?
The touch screens of iPods respond to heat, so it's not going to work with a stick/your nail because those don't produce enough heat to activate the sensors on an iPod.
Cool Experiment: Put your finger in front of an AC vent until it gets really really cold. Quickly try to control your iPod, and it shouldn't respond as well. :)Why can you only use the ipod with your finger? Like you can't use a stick or your nail...?
well a stick or your nail doesn't cover enough surface as your finger would,
sooo i would say that its because it doesn't sense it there. Why can you only use the ipod with your finger? Like you can't use a stick or your nail...?
i think it is partly heat sensitive and because your nail has no heat it doesnt notice it.
ive always wondered that tooo.....lol

What causes you finger and toe nails to turn yellow ?
it starts off in a small spot than spreads to lmost cover the nail?what is it ?What causes you finger and toe nails to turn yellow ?
You have a nail fungus. it's really hard to get rid of. The thing to do is put vicks vaporub on it and keep covered.

The first thought that came to mind was lack of exposure to air, probably as a result of wearing nailpolish for too long. After reading your details, I am more inclined towards the fungus/bacteria path. Ask a doctor.

Smoking and regular use of nail polish can cause yellow fingernails. Some home remedies that I have heard of is using Denture Tablets to soak your fingers in. Dissolve the tablet as it states on the package and then soak fingers in it for a few minutes and just repeat.
Also you can use Lemon Juice to soak your fingers in, just once your done soaking use some hand lotion to replenish moisture in your hands, and regular buffing can work as well, just not as fast.
Hope these help.
Fungus! Get some nail fungus medicine!
Also smoking can do it.
Sounds like a fungus. You might be able to stop it with an otc (over the counter) treatment that's specifically for that, but I believe that there's also a prescription that can be used as well. You might want to ask your general practitioner or podiatrist about that. I believe it's a ';brush-on'; treatment-you might ask your doctor about side- effects, or contraindications for using any anti-fungal medication on your nails.
Good luck!

Finger nails and acrylic?
I have nothing against fake nails, I actually like them the only down fall is the after math. I hate when I finally decided to take them off my nails are really weak. and I also hate the dirt that gets under the nails. My nails are now strong and heathly and I am debating should I do it again. My natural nails dont tend to grow long and if so they always break. I was wondering is there a way I can have that acrylic salon look without the acrylic.Finger nails and acrylic?

What does it mean when your nail beds on all your fingers turn dark purple?
This is called cyanosis. It indicates that there is a decrease of oxygenated blood to the area. This occurs when it is cold and the blood supply to the extremities is decreased so that blood can go to the vital organs. Run your hands under warm water or rub them together and you will see your fingers turn back to their normal color.

No, that's not healthy. That's a sign of anemia (severe) and possible blood loss from an ulcer. You need to see a doctor as soon as possible.
A form of divination using fingernails is called Onychomancy. Believe it or not, there are a great many strong superstitions associated with fingernails and fingernail clippings are often utilized in magical workings. The use of fingernail clippings in spell working would ensure that the spell affected the right person. Fingernails were also utilized in healing rituals with the clippings from the person who was ill either burned or buried. It was hoped that the illness would be cleansed. It was also considered to be very unlucky to cut your nails on a Friday or a Sunday but Monday and Thursday were auspicious days for the big event. Dactylomancy is a form of divination which was practiced with rings. This involved placing gold or silver rings on the fingernails in conjunction with certain planets.
White spots on our fingernails are regarded as a sign of good fortune. In Germany it is believed that the number of white spots indicate the years left to live. In Great Britain a whit spot on the pointer finger indicates a new friend, the middle finger predicts a new enemy, on the ring finger money or new love and if it is on our baby finger, a journey. This is remembered by using a little verse, ';A friend, a foe, money to come, a journey to go.'; A white spot on the thumb tells us that we are about to receive a gift. Black spots are a sign of bad luck or misfortune and yellow specks warn of a death.
Shape of fingernails and general appearance are used to ascertain character. Greedy people will have crooked fingernails and if they are raised in the middle it is taken as a sign of an early death. The shape of the half moon on your fingernails at the base, are an indicator of longevity, the bigger the moon the longer the life. Fingernails also have an interesting interpretation if you dream of them. Long fingernails are a sign of difficulties in your relationship, short ones can indicate an unexpected gift . Dreaming of biting your nails, especially to the quick, is a sign you should go to the doctor. Polishing your nails is a warning against impulsive behaviours but filing them indicates accomplishments achieved through your own efforts.. Cutting your fingernails is a sign of prestige and advancement but bending them back painfully speaks of a difficult time coming ahead that could last for a couple of months.

My son shut his finger in the door and the nail is brown and puss is coming out of it.?
Obviously infected. Go see a doctor so that it doesn't spread. And keep it cleanMy son shut his finger in the door and the nail is brown and puss is coming out of it.?
the nail bed is most likely dieing and he definitely has an infection if there is puss. try a topical antibiotic. He will most likely lose the nail but it will grow back, granted you get rid of the infection. don't keep the area covered w/ a band-aid, bacteria thrives in warm, moist climates. My son shut his finger in the door and the nail is brown and puss is coming out of it.?
if its still throbbing , take a red hot needle and drill it through nail . this will release the pressure and relieve the pain . pour on some peroxide , cover with band aid . he will probably lose the nail , new one will completely be grown in by 3-4 months .
You should take your son to the doctor cause that is what moms do when kids slam there fingers in doors.
Take him to the doctor,or he might get staff...not fun!
Clean the site well and get him into the doctors. Infection can happen and he will need a tetanus shot.

Is there something i can put on my finger nails and the skin around it so that i stop biting my nails.
ive tried pepper and stuff already and it always stings my eyes when i rub them. is there soemthing i can buy? thanksIs there something i can put on my finger nails and the skin around it so that i stop biting my nails.
You can buy stuff but i wouldnt recommend it..
Whenever you eat things with your fingers (like a sandwich) it usually ends up in your mouth and it takes FOREVER for it to go away lol... trust me..
How about paying for a manicure, so when you go to bite your nails you wont because it would be a total wate of money
Or you could just cut them short so that theres nothing left to bite
Good luck =]Is there something i can put on my finger nails and the skin around it so that i stop biting my nails.

POP IT OUTWhat to do if the top of your finger pops in (where the nail is)?
If you're talking about the tip popping, yeah that's a *****, but it heals in time. If you're talking about the nail cutting into the tip instead of growing over it, then you got yourself an ingrown nail. That hurts to. Best thing for ingrown nail it to use nail clippers instead of biting them. lol. If that's not it, you just gotta let them grow out and then keep them cut neatly but not too short.origins make up application

I closed my finger in a door and i know i have to put a hole in my nail, how is the best way to do it?
heating a needle
or using a screwI closed my finger in a door and i know i have to put a hole in my nail, how is the best way to do it?
Use the needle, babe. You need to relieve the pressure building up in your nail, but you don't have to drill a hole in it. Soak your finger in warm water to soften the nail. Then take a sterilized needle and poke a hole in the center of your nail. Try just to pierce the nail and not the flesh beneath it. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, ask a parent or doctor to do it for you.I closed my finger in a door and i know i have to put a hole in my nail, how is the best way to do it?
use a knife with a sharp point.. slowly spin the point of the knife like a drill until blood starts coming out. if you do it right, its pretty painless.
I helped a friend do it.
Heat a needle with a lighter for a minute and have someone else do it for you while you grab something to squeeze. You'll feel better within seconds!
DON'T use either one! The very best method is to use an ';EXACTO KNIFE'; with a new pointed blade. Just place the point in the center of the blood under the nail and begin spinning the blade with your other hand and let ';gravity'; do the pressure. The instant it pierces the nail, blood will appear and the pressure will be relieved!
P.S. Be sure and STERILIZE the blade before using it.
What?
You dont have to put a hole in your nail. It will either heal on its own or the finger nail will fall off and then a new one will grow back.
Don't put a hole in your nail. Put ice on your finger and if it's that bad, have a doctor do it. You could get infected and make it worse!
ouch. let a doctor do it. at least they can dope you up if you want
Use a hot needle. but be very careful. go slow...you may have to heat it a few times to get through the nail. Make sure that you don't just push really hard...it could cause a bad infection under the nail that way.
Don't put a hole in your nail. Don't bother it's not going to help that much just let it heal by itself. It's your body's natural way.
use a drill bit
huh, what are talking about.
dr does it, not you. you will infect it and they will have to cut it off.
easiest way to do it take a sewing needle and heat it up to sterilize it.
put in and spin around a little take it out and let blood out....repeat it until u like......
remember to sterilize the need every time u do it and after your done. also cover up the whole with gauzes so it doesnt get infected
ummmmmmmmm....i suggest you go see a doc...don't try it yourself...infection, ouch....lol
Power drill. Just kidding. I think this would require one of my favorite classic warnings from pro wrestling: kids, don't try this at home. I'd recommend going to the doctor %26amp; having it checked out first. Then, if you do need a hole in your fingernail, a trained professional can do it for you.
go to a doctor please!
Heated needle and do it NOW! All it does is relieve pressure, but that sure helps.
You are proposing voodoo majic. The only thing to do is to let it heal by itself. Putting a hole in it would allow bacteria in.
go to the emergency room and they will use heating needle. its the safest and your nail will heal up quickly, dont do it yourself as you might get infected and then u can loose your nail.
why do u have to put a hole in ur nail? thats bull. but geez that had to hurt, sorry!
screw it hard and fast..lol
what do you need a hole for
close the door on it a few more times
i would have a doctor do it
always use restraints
I use the pointed tip of an x-acto knife. It's easier to control than a screw and doesn't require heating. Just place the point where you want to make a hole, and rotate the knife handle while applying gentle pressure.
Those people who don't understand why you are doing this have obviously never had this kind of injury. The pressure under the nail from broken blood vessels can cause excruciating pain unless it is released.
Why do you ahve to put a hole in your nail? eh....
doctors they heat tiny needle pierce nail you wont feel it do it before pressure build up saves alot of pain

ummmmmmmmm....i suggest you go see a doc...don't try it yourself...infection, ouch....lol
I am growing my finger nails but they keep breaking?
does anyone have a good home remedie for strengthening nails?I am growing my finger nails but they keep breaking?
Actually, don't grow your nails too quickly. Part of them breaking is the way you use your hands, not the actual strength of the nail. Start with keeping them just to the tips of your fingers. You will have to change the way you use your hands, and this takes time. Once you have adjusted, allow them to grow just past the tips, etc.I am growing my finger nails but they keep breaking?
Try a professional manicure to start with to get your nails and cuticles in shape. Keep your hands and especially your cuticles well moisturized. Get in the habit of wearing gloves when cleaning and washing dishes. Be patient as it may take awhile if you have been neglecting your nails.
During the weekend, warm up some olive oil or milk in a small bowl and soak your nails in the mixture for 5-10 minutes. At the very least, you will get a nice finger soak. You can also add a little bit of lemon juice to bleach your nails. After the soak, pat your nails dry and paint them with a clear nail polish. You can apply more coats during the week if you need to. Also, if your nails do break don't file or tear them! It you file broken nails wrong it can really mess it up and tearing is painfull and messy. Just clip them and if you need to, even up the rest of your nails. Good luck!
sally hansen has a whole line of nail polishes (is that a word?...lol) that helps to strengthen ur nails.....n it isnt that expensive ..like $3 a bottle!!! u can find it at like ne drugstore (cvs...riteaid...etc) (check out my questions...no ones answered them yet...lol)
Take a look at how much calcium and iron you have in your diet. They are good factors that will help your nail grow and make them stronger.

The skin at the base of my finger nails is peeling off.what is the reason?
Keeping your cuticles well groomed is easy with a little effort. Dryness is the number one reason for getting hangnails, and when your cuticles are ragged, dried and peeling, it鈥檚 a sign that you need to moisturise them. The first step is to apply hand cream, lotion or nail oil and rub it into the cuticle. Even if you occasionally use hand cream, your cuticles are still probably too dry. Try to keep a hand moisturiser in your bag and use it several times daily.
One cardinal sin of cuticle care is cutting them. The cuticle is a barrier that keeps bacteria from entering your body, so it's best to leave this delicate skin intact. You should, however, groom your cuticles regularly, because overgrown cuticles can suffocate nail growth.
All you need is a good cuticle remover and a cuticle stick (called an orange stick). Don't use a cuticle oil or cream for this 鈥?a proper cuticle remover is really the only thing that can sufficiently soften the cuticle. After you apply the remover, gently push back your cuticles with the orange stick. Hold the stick at an angle to ensure that you do this gradually and gently, without damaging the cuticle. Then, move the stick in tiny circles around the base of the nail to help remove any dead or flaky skin. This whitish residue, or the ghost of the cuticle, is called pterygium, and should be cleaned from the nail as well. Do this at least three times per nail.
After you have pushed back your cuticles, you can trim any remaining hangnails using a cuticle nipper. Make sure this implement is sharp and cuts cleanly.
When the nail is clean, wipe it with a cotton ball, then moisturise liberally.

Anyone ever lose a finger or toe nail.?
i got my finger caught in the doorway near where the hinges were.
the door closed, and i got my finger caught, and my finger nail turned black, and today it fell off.
have any of you had such pain like that.Anyone ever lose a finger or toe nail.?
yes, but don`t be discouraged, it will grow backAnyone ever lose a finger or toe nail.?
I slammed my index finger between a window frame and the sill. I saw stars the pain was so intense. And like your, my nail turned black and fell off...I still have a lump near the knuckle where the window hit too, but that doesn't hurt, just a grim reminder to pay attention more.
i lost two of my tow nails, I know they were going to fall off, the were hardly hanging on so i left them there untill i stubed my tow and it fell off. i did not realy realize that i had messed them up so bad untill latter that day. By leaving them on the new ones were able to grow under them so i did not have the exposed skin.
Ouch! That's the worst. It seems like after something like that happens you constantly bump that finger too! I ended up putting a bandaid around it just to keep some padding there for a few days it was so tender.
Yes. Closed car door on finger. also lost both big toenails to infection.
I just kept it cold, lots of ice.... I've had worse pain, broke leg in 2 places, had surgery.
My son (age 4) fell down on the sidewalk and ripped the whole nail off!..AARGH!
Very painful. Good News .. your nail will grow back and you wont know the difference. It just takes a few months.
**** Luck!

Why do blacks love chicken and long finger nails!!?
I am new to usa and find that black americans love chicken, is that all they eat. one ladys nails must have beeen a foot long why does she do thastWhy do blacks love chicken and long finger nails!!?
LOL!!!! This question is hilarious...only because I know it's asked out of ignorance. (And i dont mean that disrespectfully) but I think you just honestly want to know. Well I'm black and I must admit that i LOVE chicken. Almost all black ppl I know ask the same question as you. I was once told that we love chicken so much because when blacks were slaves they would be given scraps to eat and sometimes this included chicken...so they just seasoned it up and chowed down. Its been that way ever since! lol Now the fingernail thing I would think comes down to someone's (not just black) perception of beauty. Hope that answers your question. Why do blacks love chicken and long finger nails!!?
In case you're not trolling (trying to get a emotional response), it is considered a racist stereotype in the US and probably elsewhere to assume that ';all'; blacks love chicken and ';all'; blacks have long finger nails (even black men?). Just because the few ppl you've met may have those characteristics, it does not apply to millions of Americans who are black, that you have not personally met and discussed their feelings about chicken or finger nails...If you think this was really socially acceptable to say, would you say this to a black man or woman? I know lots of whites who like bbq and collard greens, but I don't assume they all do (I live in the southern part of the US, ppl eat disgusting things here, just like all sorts of places do).
Don't care to much for chicken and I tend to stay away from fried foods. I'm not really sure why some woman find excessively long fingers nails attractive or productive. I have seen woman with such finger nails in secretarial positions. How do you type with them!?!
All races love chicken. As far as the fingernails, most black people don't have extremely long nails. Not sure how long you have been in America, but you should get out more. No one that I know has long fingernails.
Psh, that doesn't mean anything, everyone loves chicked, lol. And the whole long nails things is weird for anyone. Props to derision, i love your answers to pretty much everything!
LMFAO!
That actually made me laugh, good for you!
P.S. I hate chicken (gives me acid reflux), and I hate acrylic nails.
Where are you from?
Idiotville?
Not all blacks love chicken because i am and i hate chicken
And i dont have long fingernails.
Why do fool ask dumb questions?
I love chicken! hahahahaha
I am black and my partner is white. He is the one of us who loves chicken the most!
Not all blacks wear long fingernails.
Because they are animals
Im half black/white and i hate chicken.

Is it neglect if your child some how gets two finger nails ripped off at daycare and the teacher does nothing?
Yes! I would go crazy if that was my child! they should have contacted you immediately and given the child first aid! If it was left untreated it could get seriously infected! And i'd be questioning how exactly it happened! Is it neglect if your child some how gets two finger nails ripped off at daycare and the teacher does nothing?
I have a feeling I am not hearing the entire story.
If you have a child in someone's care, and that his/her/its business, that person has an obligation to provide a safe environment and take reasonable cautions from injury. When someone does not do this, it is called negligence.
If someone does get injured (for whatever reason), the care giver is obligated to take necessary steps to minimize the risk to the child. That usually means calling parents and either performing first aid, taking or calling a medical facility to render the necessary care.
If none of these things happened, that is negligence at minimum.
Now, if the injury and the case of the injury was so far fetched no one in reasonable mind can foresee it happening, then the injury itself is not negligent. It is called an accident.
It is hard to believe child with finger nails ripped off, blood dripping, and screaming, caught no attention. What happened next?
Were you called? What do you mean by ';does nothing?'; Told the child to be quiet?
Again, I don't think I have the entire picture. Is it neglect if your child some how gets two finger nails ripped off at daycare and the teacher does nothing?
I know that a daycare must report the incident (usually in a form that you are supposed to sign). If you think something negligent occurred, I suggest to get to the bottom of the situation. Where did the accident occur, and what is the child reporting. Also, review the teacher if at all possible and if necessary, you can report the daycare. I have worked in a daycare and have seen how these ';teachers'; can really mistreat children.
If a situation like this has never occurred, maybe the child was hurt during recess or some other contact situation. It is hard to supervise that many children, during these times and accidents are more likely to occur.
I hope all is well with the child, and I do hope those fingers heal. It sounded like a pretty painful accident.
Good Luck.
ummm yeah I definitely think so. The teacher should be always watching out for the kids, I mean what could your kid be doing to get his finger nails ripped off, you'd think the teacher would be like stop, don't do that, depending on what he was doing. Personally, I think you should take your child out of this daycare system, and go elsewhere. or better yet leave him with a friend or family member when you can't be with him, that way your most likely saving your money, and you can trust that he will be in good care. I hope your child's fingers feel better and good luck.
Were the two nails ripped at one day or different times? If you noticed it, why didn't you ask the teacher? You probably didn't notice it til later right? unfortunately hands and feet are the less noticable when it comes to noticing scratches or injuries. Is your child old enough to talk and tell teh teacher he/she was hurt, if so? ask the child what the teacher do about it? or if he/she went to the teacher about it.
Also, were the nails long enough to be ripped out? If so, then you need to make sure they are trimmed short so they don't have the risk of being ripped out. When you pick up your child, is the teacher detailed over what your child did that day? Are there any signs that your child doesn't want to attend daycare, such as crying and refusing to go, cringe when you get too close to him/her? Best thing is to go there unannounce and see how the environment is. If the teacher doesn't like you to do that, then I'd move your child to somewhere else that allows suprised visits.
I think we need more information before we jump to the conclusion that it's considered neglect. What do you mean by the finger nails ripped off...torn at the end (we all have that happen to us), fake nails- which a preschool child probably shouldn't have anyway, or completely off...which would cause blood and I have a hard time believing that nothing would be done about it. Regardless of what...it seems like a concern to you and you should bring this up with the teacher. If there was no blood, it could very well have been a situation that a child didn't even realize they did it...or they did but didn't bring it up to the teacher.
Did your child tell the teacher? (It sounds painful - so I'm sure they did.)
If they told the teacher - you should have received a call - or at the very least been given a ';boo boo'; report at the end of the day.
Did they even put a bandaid on them?
I would definitely complain.
We call home for any head injury or any blood.
oh YES,you should take the child to the doctor or hospital and have them make record of this and also report this to child services or who ever the doctor suggest, because if they don't do anything about this it could be something else going on that's not been reported.
did the teacher send your child to the school nurse/were you called/ or your child came home like this/ its neglect if you were not notified and your child reported it to the teacher/ the teacher should be reported if your child reported to her and nothing was done
accidents happen but i would definitely demand an explanation of what happened and where /what the teachers were doing when it happened. also, what consequences did the other child face if another kid did it?
If that happened to my child and the teacher did nothing, whether it was technically called ';neglect'; or not would be the least of that daycare's concern. God Bless you.
Depends on how it happened and if they were real nails or fakes but either way if the teacher was aware of it I would think he or she should have done something
it all depends on what the kid says happens..and if its happening more than once and also if other stuff is happening to him...than in fact its prob neglect.
If the child was hurt and the teacher did not care for the injury, then yes.
I don't know if it's neglect but it's defnitely WRONG!
yes? you should go somewhere else .That is irresponsible

Do clubbed nails disfigure the finger or toe ?
I can't figure out what exactly a clubbed nail is or looks like.
From the photos I can find, it looks like the nail is almost glued down and wrapping around the finger. It looks like the finger (or toe?) has swollen up.
I read that for clubbed fingernails the fingers resembles a drumstick.
This doesn't make any sense to me.
Do the nails get distorted which then pulls the shape of the finger and leaves it difigured? Or is clubbing more subtle ?Do clubbed nails disfigure the finger or toe ?
Digital clubbing is an anatomical change. They think starts in the nail bed, but it is one of those things that everyone knows it when they see it, have a good general idea what it means when they see it, but have no real explanation for why it happens. It is usually a symptom of : Inflammatory bowel disease, pulmonary malignancy, asbestosis, chronic bronchitis, COPD, cirrhosis, congenital heart disease, endocarditis, atrioventricular malformations, fistulas, cystic fibrosis, Crohn's disease, etc.
The strange thing is that it can be just one digit, or the whole hand. I seem to remember thinking that the nail was a bit looser on people with digital clubbing, but it has been a while since I have seen anyone with it since I am no longer working with adults. (though you can see these with children).
Please go here for a good website about clubbing, go to pathophysiology :

From the photos I can find, it looks like the nail is almost glued down and wrapping around the finger. It looks like the finger (or toe?) has swollen up.
I read that for clubbed fingernails the fingers resembles a drumstick.
This doesn't make any sense to me.
Do the nails get distorted which then pulls the shape of the finger and leaves it difigured? Or is clubbing more subtle ?Do clubbed nails disfigure the finger or toe ?

Why are my finger nails turning black?
my nails have turn white now turning black is something wrong with me.I'm 13 and weight 200 pounds could that be the reason. i don't eat a lots of fruit most junk foodWhy are my finger nails turning black?
Sounds like a fungal infection. Talk to your doctor!!

Black Fingernails
If you have a black fingernail, you may be wondering whether it is caused by a fungal infection under the nail. This may well be the case, however, other things can cause a nail to turn black, so it's important to consider other possibilities and perhaps consult your doctor before jumping to conclusions.
Fungal infection of fingernails and toenails is called onychomycosis. Only a few species of fungus are capable of invading human hair and nails - they often gain access through a break in the skin or under the nail at the tip of the finger or toe. Because they derive their nutrients from the protein found in human nails and dead skin cells, these fungi do not invade healthy tissue. Instead, they invade the matrix of the nail itself and grow there, causing a black fingernail or toenail.
Onychomycosis is quite common: more than ten percent of the North American population will experience a fungal nail infection at some time in their lives: it is probably the most common cause of nail abnormalities in the general population, however, there are other causes. A blow to the affected nail is the most obvious alternative. When a nail or the root of a nail is struck so that blood vessels are broken and a bruise forms under the nail, a black area develops that takes a very long time to clear up. Depending on the severity of the bleeding, the whole nail or only part of the nail will be affected. Nails grow very slowly and bruises are similarly slow to disappear even after soreness subsides - a black nail that persists long after the initial injury is no cause for alarm. It will grow out in time.
Nail injuries are, however, the route of entry for other organism that can either live in and under the nail without causing a problem or set up an infection in exposed tissue. Some species of bacteria are known to colonize spaces in nail beds without causing infection. Some of these bacteria produce color changes, though shades of green are more typical than black. The bacterial colonies can persist for long periods of time without causing noticeable inflammation. Various species of yeast can set up severe and progressive infections of the nail bed and tissues around the nail, however these infections usually do not cause a black fingernail, and are generally severe enough that the need for medical attention is obvious. Yeast infections are, in fact, another form of onychomycosis.
If you have not suffered a nail injury and your black fingernail is slowly progressing and causing the nail to become thick, deformed, and crumbly, you may have true onychomycosis. Typically, infected nails are white, yellow, brown or black, and variations on these shades may be present. The infection often starts on a toenail and progresses to other toes and fingers, and is very resistant to treatment. If you suspect you have a fungal nail infection, make an appointment with your physician for a proper diagnosis. Why are my finger nails turning black?
You seriously need to go to the Doctor.
Do not wait around any longer.
Go as soon as possible.
That's not normal at all.

Do gelatin pills really help your finger nails grow??
no, that's an old wives taleDo gelatin pills really help your finger nails grow??
No - you can buy special vitamins for nails and hair xxxDo gelatin pills really help your finger nails grow??
Eww, why would you want your fingernails to grow anyways? I hate when my nails get long, its grossssssss.
no, its only if you eat real Jello, and LOTS of it.
Only if they have keratin in them otherwise nope.
No, not really. The best thing to do is to drink a lot of milk or calcium. Sounds corny but it works. and try not to bite them lol.
if you want your nails to grow, get biotin.
it also makes the hair grow and improves the skin.
I don't think so.
yes.....but you should buy a bottle of ';hair, skin and nail'; vitamins. can get them at any drug store. they will help your nails grow and also be good for your hair and skin.
i do know that prenatal vitamins do work.
doubt it
I'm sure they help your nails and hair grow stronger, but not sure about faster.

How do finger and toe nails grow?
They are produced from the skin and are primarily to protect the tips and tops of the fingers and toes from scrapes and crush type injuries.
Midnight~Angel :)How do finger and toe nails grow?
nails are part of the skin, and grow from a protein called keratin, which is produced by cells under the surface of your skin, at the root (white part of your nail.)How do finger and toe nails grow?
Not sure about the finger nails as mine seem to break constantly but the toe nails grow quite nicely given the fact that I need to cut them.
Its a pity its not visa versa lol.
appartently they are by products, or waste products from your body, thats all I know and thats how they can tell if you have calcium deficencies, it show in your nails. I know this isnt that helpful but its better than nothing
they come out of ur fingers and toes...
they grow from the base, out of the cuticle.
duno
They are dead skin cells apparently and the finger nails grow 10 times faster than the toe nails (no idea why).
From the base of the cuticle.I think...I know mine grow slowly...darn it!!!Too much manual labor and hand washing!
It doesn't actually grow at the white end- it grow right in where your skin meets your nail. Then, when it has grown enough to reach the white bit it turns white then you cut it off. Hope that helped!
quite slowly
Anatomically fingernails and toenails, which are made of a tough protein called keratin and are produced from living skin cells in the fingers and toes, are made up of many different parts:
The free edge is the part of the nail that extends past the finger, beyond the nail plate. There are no nerve endings in the nail - this is the growing part of the nail still under the skin at the nail's proximal end.
eponychium or cuticle, is the fold of skin at the proximal end of the nail.
paronychium is the fold of skin on the sides of the nail.
hyponychium is the attachment between the skin of the finger or toe and the distal end of the nail.
nail plate is the hard and translucent portion, composed of keratin.
nail bed is the adherent connective tissue that underlies the nail, often colloquially referred to as the ';quick.';
lunula is the crescent shaped whitish area of the nail bed (when visible)
nail fold a fold of hard skin overlapping the base and sides of a fingernail or toenail.
In common usage the word nail usually refers to the nail plate only.
Long, manicured nails are a fashion statement.Nails grow at an average rate of 3 millimetres a month [1] Fingernails require 3 to 6 months to regrow completely. Toenails require 12 to 18 months. Actual growth rate is dependent upon age, season, exercise level, and hereditary factors. Contrary to popular belief, nails do not continue to grow after death; the skin dehydrates and tightens, making the nails (and hair) appear to grow.
This growth record can show the history of recent health and physiological imbalances, and has been used as a diagnostic tool since ancient times.[2] Major illness will cause a deep groove to form across the nails. Discoloration, thinning, thickening, brittleness, splitting, grooves, Mees' lines, small white spots, receded lunula, clubbing (convex), flatness, spooning (concave) can indicate illness in other areas of the body, nutrient deficiencies, drug reaction or poisoning, or merely local injury. Nails can also become thickened (onychogryphosis), loosened (onycholysis), infected with fungus (onychomycosis) or degenerative (onychodystrophy); for further information see nail diseases.
Wow Quiz! Can't beat that awesomely thorough answer! Well done!

Why are my finger nails blue/purple?
All day my finger nails have been a blue/purple color rather than the normal pinkish color. Why?Why are my finger nails blue/purple?
it sounds like your not getting enough oxygen to me, you should definitey get that checked outWhy are my finger nails blue/purple?
This is called Reynaud's Disease. You can look it up on the internet for more information. I have this. Depending on the severity (mine's not so severe) you may need medication. I had to go to the Cancer Center in my area (for other problems not related to this) and the doctor noticed my fingernails, toe nails and even my lips were always blue or a deep purplish color. It is worse when I am cold. Make sure you were gloves or mittens in the wintertime and just warm clothing in general. I really have no other problems except for the color. A lot of people who don't know me ask what's wrong and it is tiring trying to explain it. Even my family ';forgets'; sometimes and will continue to ask me about it. I've dealt with it as long as I can remember. I think it just makes me unique! As long as you aren't in pain I wouldn't worry about it. My doctor told me that, worse case scenario it is possible to end up with no feeling at all in fingers and toes and amputation may occur but that is very, very, very rare. Good luck to you.
Lack of blood flow. could be caused by many factors. Are you hands warm enough? Is this the first time you have noticed this? If it is a continuing condition see a doctor. Raynauds disease can cause bluish nails, cold finger tips and cold toes.
Are you sure somehow you didnt hurt your finger. Or maybe its bruised im not ny sort of doctor lol but you should see a dctor in a week or so if it isnt gone. I know i was no help sorry
Cold...or maybe marker:)
you might be really cold. put on a jacket!

Is it a breech of etiquette to clip your finger nails at work in your cubicle?
Eeew! Don't clip them all the way down to the cubicle! They'll bleed!
Oh, wait... I'm thinking, 'cuticle.'Is it a breech of etiquette to clip your finger nails at work in your cubicle?
I hate that sound and no it doesn't belong in the workplace. Do it at home already! Is it a breech of etiquette to clip your finger nails at work in your cubicle?
i do, and my toe nails... haha but my girls don't care! that's how we roll
no. it's just nasty
not if you chew them off!
It's annoying when the janitor has to clean up someone elses nail clippings.
yuk! there's a time and place for everything! i especially hate when a woman pulls out her lipstick/makeup in public to primp or a man picking his teeth after eating or blowing their nose at the table. just excuse yourself and proceed to the restroom, no one will mind.
Yes, I have major problem with loose clipped nails laying around - gross!!
I saw someone clipping their nails during a wedding at a church - that was inappropriate for sure!
Cutting nails and shaving is not done in public.
That's gross. Keep grooming for at home.
You must be having a really slow day if you're worried about this...as long as you leave the clippings in your wastebasket, and the boss doesn't catch you, you're OK. Otherwise do it on one of your breaks.
Yes, it's a breech of etiquette. Clipping your finger nails is a bathroom function.
Yes, I would say it is bad manners to do that when ANYONE is around. It should be done in complete privacy, like going to the toilet.
As long as no one is around I think its OK. There was this girl once that started clipping her nails right in front of me over the trash can. It was GROSS!
I get grossed out whenever anybody cuts their nails in public. I strongly feel it should be done in the bathroom or somewhere private. Bleeech!
People who blow their noses loudly at their desks bother me worse. I say if it's not disturbing anyone and clippings don't fly everywhere, it's not that big a deal.

How do you kick a bad habit of cracking fingers, nail biting, or skin chewing (Please, anything will help)?
Ok, my nails are SUPER short and messed up from nail biting, skin is frayed from biting it off (odd habit, dont ask), and cracking my fingers....theyre stiff as a board, please help, i don't know how to kick these habits and they're getting worse and worse, i want to cup my hands all the time so people can't see them. Please help. =)How do you kick a bad habit of cracking fingers, nail biting, or skin chewing (Please, anything will help)?
Hi Vette,
I love Cindy's suggestion of rewarding yourself for not biting and chewing etc. Problem is that these are outward responses to internal stimuli. If you focus on quitting the habit, another one will form in response to the stimuli, maybe a worse one like a shoulder tick or a neck twitch or an eye flinch. Then you will have beautiful nails and skin but will look like a shock therapy experiment. The answer is to monitor when you do these things and what is going on mentally at the time. Reason through the stimuli and the habit will stop on it's own. You may want to try something like a peppermint oil on your hands as this will get your attention(yet not be offensive) and help you to be aware of when you are biting and chewing. Good luck! How do you kick a bad habit of cracking fingers, nail biting, or skin chewing (Please, anything will help)?
Nail biting - Thumb Stop which is available at the drug store or cayanne pepper. Put it on your nails to remind you not to bite.
Cracking your fingers - this will only get worse if you continue. I suggest you talk to your doctor.
Skin chewing - see nail biting.
Reward yourself for each day you stay away from the habit.

I usually clip them when they get long and then file them into the right shape.Finger and Toe nail?
Both. It takes two!

Clip and clip. =)
i prefer to clip them.
Clip then file so you can smooth out the uneven edges.
Clip them, then file them
Clip, clip , clip...!!!
Both. You should clip them slightly longer then file them for a smooth and nice and even looking finish.

What are all those white bump things on your finger nails?
Thats a sign of a calcium deficiancy, they're not harmful at all just ignore them. You'll be fine Colee. What are all those white bump things on your finger nails?
Its not a deficiency at all. The most common cause is injury to your nails before they grow in the nail bed. They take about 8 months to grow out. If your a nail biter like me you'll have heaps!
There is a small chance of it being zinc deficiency or a liver disorder but thats fairly unlikely and if you did have a liver disorder you'd have felt other effects by now.
They are harmless, just ugly! :)What are all those white bump things on your finger nails?
Theyre just were the nail has been bumped or knocked and the nails growth plate has been damaged leaving a scar (what we see as white flecks) many people claim they show deficiencies in zinc and other minerals but this isn't true.
I hear it can be a sign of cancer and crap like that...but i wouldnt believe that id say its because of not enough water or protein lolkiss lip gloss make up application

What are the half 'moons' on the bottom of finger nails?
why do some people have them and some people dont? what exactly are they? What are the half 'moons' on the bottom of finger nails?
Those are your nail beds, the 'quick' of your nails. It is from these that your nails grow... They are not actually located on or in your nail, but under them, and are visible through your nail.
Visibility varies from person to person, but they are useful for diagnosing disease, as an abnormally colored one may be a symptom. What are the half 'moons' on the bottom of finger nails?
i was totally thinking this and i was thinking about asking a question about this. i only have the moons on my thumbs and a little on my pinky. i think they're pretty if you have good nails. i wish i had them on all my nails!
