Why do we have finger nails?

Why do we have finger and toe nails?

Why do they do?

Do we really need them? Why do we have finger nails?
i'm pretty sure its to protect the nerves at the tips of our fingers like have u ever cut your nails to short? it hurts cause the tips of your fingers are filled with nerve ending that allow you to feel things and they r really sensitive. and obviously cause they r fun to put nail polish on. jk. if that isn't what your looking for try typing in on googleWhy do we have finger nails?
As a guy who doesn't cut his fingernails, I don't understand why we cut them. They're incredibly useful - from opening packages to scratching myself to killing live animals in the woods, and slicing people's hands when they try to give me a handshake.. I love my fingernails and can't imagine life without them. As for toenails, who knows, they seem to just get ingrown and painful.
They may be a result of the fact that we descended from creatures who had claws which were used for climbing trees and digging in the soil fro find bugs to eats. So you can see that our claws have been greatly reduced through hundreds of thousands of years of evolution.
Nails have evolved from claws or talons showing our evolutionary descent
