My husband jamed his finger in the truck door his nail is purple ?

and his finger has swolled i gave him advil for the throbing pain .what can i do for his finger to keep down the pain and swelling?thanks he dont want to go to the dr his finger is not broken. My husband jamed his finger in the truck door his nail is purple ?
Ice, elevate and advil is what we recommend with injuries such as this. Ice will help keep the swelling down, but do not put the ice directly on to the finger or else you will damage the tissue its in contact with. Put the ice on for 15-20 minutes 4 to 5 times a day. Keeping it elevated, around the level of your shoulder, will also help minimize the swelling and also the throbbing pain. Keeping it below the level of the heart will only increase the pain and swelling. Advil is a good over the counter medication that will help with the inflammatory process.

His finger nail sounds like it may eventually fall off. There are times in which a lot of blood has accumulated under the finger nail bed and a small hole is created in the nail bed to alleviate the pressure and allows for the extra blood to drain out. It sounds painful, but it isn't and the pain relief is instant. I hope this helps, feel free to email me if you have any other questions or concerns. My husband jamed his finger in the truck door his nail is purple ?
Thats what i would have done!!! Nice answer!

Give his some ice to put on it or soak it in a bowl of ice water for 15-20 minutes 2-3 times a day. How many advil did he take? He could take the amount equal to a prescription dose if it is really throbbing.
ICE,ICE,ICE.........THE NAIL WILL FALL OFF BUT IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME...............
I'm a nurse. He needs an x-ray to see if the finger is broken or a chipped bone. He needs something more for the pain also. Purple isn't a good color for an injured finger.
nothing i know it sucks if his nail is black or blue it willeither fall off or grow normally but stay that color advils it though.
ice pack for the swelling and pain killers for the pain.
Go to the doctor and they will inject Novocaine to deaden it and then rip out his nail and blood will splatter because it will un-swell it.

Or... put ice on it and wait a few days and then in a couple of weeks, his nail will turn black and fall off on it's own.

Either scenario you choose, his nail will eventually grow back.
well if his nail is purple more than likely it is a blood clot...if he just slammed his finger in the door of course it is going to be swollen for a little while but it wont last long...i slammed my finger in a slidding door and my finger nail was purple when it healed the nail ended up falling off which is painless and a new nail grew back
Just a cold pack. Hopefully he does not loose the nail after it heals.
ouch!!

that happened to my husband too!!

about 6 yrs. ago

he put ice on his, but ended up really goin to the doc
i had a bookshelf fall on my toe and you should take him to the hospital. laura j is right.

what will happen is when you go to the hospital they will lance the nail and let the blood out. it literally takes seconds and he will feel better right away. the small hole they put in the nail allows the blood to escape, relieving the pressure and preserves the tissue underneath.

if you don't do this, the tissue will die and the nail will fall off. this will only make things worse and he will spend the next few days in pain. it takes one quick little hole to clear everything up.
How do you know its not broken, or chipped bone need to get an x-ray to really know for sure
advil every 6 hours, ice pack or cold pack and elevate the hand....lay a pillow on his chest and have him prop his hand on it.
but a cold combress on it to keep the swelling down his nail might also fall off
just keep giving him advil or tylenol for the pain and keep his finger wrapped or covered with ice to keep from swelling and to help the swelling go down his fingernail might fall off depends on how bad it is, and his nail is probably just bruised.
A broken bone will react differently in everyone, when I broke my feet, both at one time, the nails on them turned purple and fell off, but I could still move them. For swelling I suggest a cold compress, ice in a ziplock baggie and wrapped in a clean cotton towel.

NEVER put an ice bag directly on the skin, it can cause freezer burn and make it stick to your skin. He may lose his fingernail(s), and eventually, with age, get arthritis in the damaged finger(s) if not treated promptly.

But this is his choice. Remind him, later as he complains of the aches and pains in that region, what he chose to do.
Give him a lot of ice to put on it, and make sure that he's taking the Advil every 4-6 hours.

His fingernail will fall off, and his finger is going to hurt for a week, but there's really nothing that a doc can do, anyways, but what I'm telling you to do now.
An ice pack to reduce the swelling, plus it will numb it.
ICE IT!!!! check with the DR if it doesnt improve, the nail will fall off and regrow.
put ice on it and hope the nail dosn't fall off.
